Chestnut offers two distinct play-to-earn paradigms: the Daily Leaderboards and Gauntlet Events! Daily rewards depend on a dynamic system called The Loot Curve, whereas Gauntlet rewards are significantly bigger rewards released specifically for these events.
The diagram below provides an overview of the two game modes, which are described in more details in the following subsections.
In both cases, the better your performance in combat, the higher your rewards will be; see Combat system for more information about combat.
Every day, you can roam the public maps and take down monsters or even other players to accrue Chestnuts. Chestnuts are not a token and are simply a points system within the game.
The more Chestnuts you accumulate, the higher you rank on the daily leaderboard.
If you get killed by another player (or players), you lose an amount of Chestnuts proportional to the amount of damage that they dealt to you (100% if they dealt 100%, 50% if they dealt 50% and monsters dealt the other 50%, etc.). Moreover, other players get the Chestnuts they made you lose, making killing other players very profitable!
At the end of the day, the top three players receive DAI rewards directly sent to their wallets, depending on their rank on the leaderboard as well as the level of The Loot Curve.
The image below shows how the leaderboard bar looks like:

The Loot Curve is designed to reward organic play and encourage regular players to join the game. As more players participate and interact organically, the Curve gains in levels which in turn increase the size of the daily reward pool, which can reach up to 20 DAI per day or more in the future! Of course, the exact algorithm leading to the levelling-up of the Curve remains secret to prevent gaming the system.
If you're looking for an even greater challenge and bigger rewards, then Gauntlet Events are where it's at. These exclusive events occur regularly at specific times and on specific maps (announced on social media and eventually on the title screen), featuring tougher monsters and terrain to test your skills.
In these events, enemies do not drop Chestnuts, they drop DAI that are accrued to your in-game pocket. If you manage not to die until the end of the event and to claim your carried DAI at the Chestnut tree, your loot will be sent directly to your wallet!
In recent events, the prize pools for such events ranged from 50 DAI to 150 DAI!
But beware β PvP is a key aspect of Gauntlet Events, meaning other players can and will do their best to murder you and steal your hard-earned DAI. Survival is the name of the game, as players must fend off both monsters and each other to claim their rewards.
Current Gauntlet events are organized by the Chestnut team. In the future, players will be able to design and host their own Gauntlet events, specifying the map, monsters and rewards!
Player-hosted Gauntlets will have the possibility to be free or paid access - accessible by purchasing a key. The major part of revenues from key sales will go to the players hosting the Gauntlets, thus opening another avenue of revenues for players able to create thrilling and exciting Gauntlet events!
All creatures in the game, be it monsters or other players, usually carry some form of reward.
In the free roam mode, monsters carry Chestnuts, and so do players who already killed monsters during the day. In Gauntlet events, monsters (and players who killed monsters) carry DAI rewards.
Whenever a character (monster or player) is killed, the reward they carry is distributed to the players who contributed to the kill, proportionally to their damage contribution.
Example:
A monster is carrying 100 DAI and has 200HP. Player A damaged the monster for 150HP and Player B damaged it for 50 HP. Player A contributed 75% of the damage and Player B contributed 25%. When the monster dies, Player A will receive 75 DAI in his in-game pocket, while player B will receive 25 DAI.
Following that, Players A and B will promptly attempt to murder each other to steal each other's loot of course.
